I wrote "Courage Grows" just after seeing a screening of "!WOMEN ART REVOLUTION". This documentary tells the story, like so many others, of a struggle toward equal treatment, a battle to be taken seriously, and the people who had no choice but to put their lives between the wrongness of the past and the possibilities future. I was wracked with questions, as I had been so many times before, of how social movement's are spurred and how I grew to be the activist that I am. How do we learn the need to use our lives as blockades against pigheadedness? How do we bring ourselves out into the blaring and beautiful light of critical thought? I do not know how to pinpoint this important process, but I wanted the proceeds from this song to go to an organization that seeks to answer these same questions. The Highlander Research and Education Center (highlandercenter.org) has been doing this work for more than 80 years. Highlander has been a seed bed for grassroots leadership in America. Leaders in the Civil Rights Movement, the Appalachian peoples struggles, and immigrant and workers rights movements have found their voices at Highlander. In their own words: "Highlander serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. We work with people fighting for justice, equality and sustainability, supporting their efforts to take collective action to shape their own destiny."
